Despite the economic growth experienced in this region, which halved extreme poverty between 2003 and 2012, 175 million people still live in poverty, according to data from the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
Chronic poverty affects both urban and rural areas, but it is estimated that 75% of the world’s poor live in rural zones. These communities are often isolated and lack access to basic essential services such as electricity, clean water, and healthcare.
